چکیده

The paper compares acoustic models which predict the position of stress in bisyllabic words in Greek varieties. It is shown that while in Thessalian Greek ratios of peak amplitude and F1 are the best predictors of stress, in Athenian and Cypriot Greek these are ratios of durations and f0. Furthermore in Cypriot Greek morphological category of the token affects the acoustic prominence of the stressed vowel.

Effects of Two Linguistically Proximal Varieties on the Spectral and Coarticulatory Properties of Fricatives: Evidence from Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek

Several studies have explored the acoustic structure of fricatives, yet there has been very little acoustic research on the effects of dialects on the production of fricatives. This article investigates the effects of two linguistically proximal Modern Greek dialects, Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek on the temporal, spectral, and coarticulatory properties of fricatives and aims to determine th...

Velar Softening: An Acoustic Study in Modern Greek

In (Modern) Greek, velar consonants become palatalized before front vowels following an allophonic rule. In many southern dialects, the variants that result from palatalization further undergo softening in this same position. While velar softening is well-documented in Greek dialectology studies, most previous work is based on impressionistic data. In the present study, several acoustic and psy...

Extending the Fontana/Halpern clitic typology, we propose a trajectory of lexicalization from X clitics v...

This paper attempts an anatomy of the linguistic ‘difference’ of the Cypriot variety of Greek. By placing this in the wider context of the hi...
